SAFE Corporation Is Issued U.S. Patent
on Detecting Plagiarism
CUPERTINO, CA (January 22, 2009) - Software Analysis
& Forensic Engineering Corporation, the leading
provider of tools for detecting and measuring software
intellectual property, has been issued U.S. Patent 7,503,035
for its CodeMatch® tool for detecting software plagiarism,
copyright infringement, and certain forms of trade secret
theft.
CodeMatch is part of CodeSuite®, which also comprises
BitMatch®, CodeCross®, CodeDiff®, and SourceDetective®.
CodeMatch compares source code from two programs and
pinpoints areas of suspected copying. CodeDiff finds
differences in source code from programs that are nearly
identical and has been used to measure changes in software
intellectual property. BitMatch compares source code
to executable binary code to help find possible copying.
SourceDetective automatically searches the Internet
to determine whether matching code elements in two different
programs are unique or commonplace.
CodeMatch was originally created by Bob Zeidman for
use in his consulting business. Bob was asked to compare
two sets of source code to find copying. The process
was long and tedious and though Bob got paid per hour,
he decided to automate the process to speed it up. Working
in his spare time, Bob created the CodeMatch program.
Though some similar programs have been developed at
universities, none were very accurate, reliable, or
user-friendly. Bob used his own real-world experience
and invited the feedback of consultants who have worked
for years supporting software IP litigation. When word
got out about CodeMatch, Bob started getting overwhelmed
with requests for it. In 2008 Bob spun off the program,
now incorporated in a suite of analysis and comparison
tools called CodeSuite, into a new company called SAFE
Corporation. Since day one, SAFE has been profitable
and has been growing despite the faltering worldwide
economy.
CodeSuite can be downloaded for free from the SAFE
Corporation website.
